Five members of the GB women’s squad have taken part in a training camp and mini boxing tournament in Crete, where they picked up two gold medals at Olympic weights (51kg and 60kg) and a bronze at 69kg. Hartlepool boxer Amanda Coulson (pictured) was the highest scoring boxer of the entire tournament.
GB coach Nigel Davies, who - along with Dave Alloway - was with the team as they boxed in three floodlit venues over consecutive evenings, said: “This multi nations tournament provided some very strong competition and some essential international experience for the squad, so to win three medals out of a possible five is exceptional.”
Day one – quarter finals
On the first evening an outstanding performance for Nicola Adams (51kg) saw her beat Russia's number one Elena Savelyevia 4-2, and Amanda
Coulson (60kg) dominated her bout against Claire Ghabrial of Australia, winning 12-6. Savannah Marshall (75kg) shrugged off the efforts of Andrea Strohmaier of Germany and sailed to a 7-1 victory.
Lucy O’Connor’s (51kg) first bout started positively and the GB boxer ended the first round 3-1 up against Ewelina Pekalska of Poland. However, Pekalska closed the gap in the second and was a 10-5 winner after a bad final round for Lucy. Despite a valiant effort, Ruth Raper (60kg) was also unlucky in her first bout, losing against a much more experienced opponent, Julia Irmen of Germany, 13-4.
Day two – semi finals
The semi finals on the second evening saw Nicola Adams edge ahead of another top Russian – the country’s second ranked Aleksandra Kuleshova. Nicola won this contest 7-5 after a good final two rounds.
Amanda Coulson produced another outstanding display of boxing to win every round against Canadian Stephanie Walker with fast powerful combination punches. The final score was 15-3.
Savannah Marshall had to settle for bronze after losing to Russian Svetlana Kosova after a five point deficit after the first two rounds. The GB boxer snatched back three points in the last round and seemed to be scoring cleaner shots, but the final score of 6-4 didn’t reflect this.
Day three - finals
Finals day ended on a high, with Nicola Adams and Amanda Coulson both winning gold medals against strong opponents. Nicola beat Swedish European champion Shipra Neilsson in a one-sided bout, while Amanda Coulson racked up an impressived fourteen points against her German opponent Julia Irmen.
