Tom Stalker, Fred Evans and Anthony Joshua will compete at the Bocskai Memorial Tournament in Debrecen, Hungary, from 7-12 February 2012. Andrew Selby and Luke Campbell will take part in The Strandja Cup in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 21-26 February 2012.
In the weight categories where Great Britain is yet to qualify a boxer for 2012 a number of the contenders will be given the chance to stake a claim for selection for the second Olympic qualifier in April in Trabzon, Turkey. Light flyweight, Charlie Edwards, lightweight, Martin Ward, middleweight, Callum Smith, and heavyweight, Warren Baister, will compete at the Bocskai. Lightweights Joe Cordina and Iain Weaver and heavyweight, Simon Vallily, will travel to Bulgaria. Great Britain’s women will also compete at The Strandja Cup where Nicola Adams and Savannah Marshall will fill the slots at flyweight and middleweight. The lightweight selection will be decided in mid-February. Rob McCracken, Performance Director, British Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) said: “These are two high quality tournaments that will feature many of the world’s leading nations. They will provide good competitive action for those boxers that have already qualified for 2012 and give those that want to go to the second qualifier an opportunity to shine and stake a claim for selection.” In 2011, male and female boxers from the GB Boxing squad won 45 medals in 11 elite international competitions.
